Prologue
Before the Honeymoon
The Blackwood Resort prologue begins before anyone boards a plane. Oliver is counting down to a tropical honeymoon with Stacy and looking forward to a rare stretch of time that belongs to just the two of them. Stacy has a different list to work through. Her business calls run late, and her laptop is coming along, even though this is supposed to be their break.
Then she brings up another change: her mother, Samantha, is joining the holiday. Oliver agrees because he knows Samantha could use time away, but his enthusiasm isn't quite the same. He still wants to believe the island will give him and Stacy the closeness he's been missing. With work and family already in the picture, can this trip really be theirs?
A honeymoon should feel like a shared celebration, but this prologue finds Oliver and Stacy imagining different versions of the same trip. Oliver is already thinking about quiet days on a tropical island. Stacy is still fielding late business calls, with her laptop ready to travel alongside them. The mood mixes humor with disappointment.
Stacy isn't indifferent to her husband. She loves Oliver and wants their marriage to work, but managing her time is difficult even when they have something special planned. The laptop is a telling detail: work hasn't simply delayed their vacation preparations; it's becoming part of the vacation itself.
The moment worth noticing comes when Stacy tells him that Samantha will join them. Oliver doesn't turn the conversation into an argument. He agrees, recognizing that his mother-in-law needs a holiday. That response says something about his upbeat, considerate nature. It also makes his disappointment more understandable. Wanting to help a family member and wanting privacy with a new spouse aren't mutually exclusive feelings.
That quiet contradiction gives the chapter its shape. There is no need for a dramatic confrontation, because the imbalance between their expectations is already doing the work. Stacy talks about obligations and arrangements while Oliver holds on to his picture of a romantic escape. Neither is portrayed as uncaring, and that keeps their disagreement from becoming a simple contest between a right and a wrong partner.
As an opening chapter, Before the Honeymoon works because the obstacles are small enough to seem manageable. A call can end. A laptop can be closed. One more guest might even make the holiday more enjoyable. Yet Oliver has to make these compromises before reaching the island. When the next episode takes the family on its journey to the resort, those unresolved expectations travel with them. The question is no longer whether they will go on a honeymoon, but whether it can feel like one once they arrive.
